SaberCats’ High-Scoring Christian Dyer
‘I want to inspire every person to chase their dream’
By Aaron Wilson
Christian Dyer sprinted across the line for another try, his third of the season for the SaberCats.
It was no surprise to see Dyer break away again.
As successful as Dyer has been for the 3-1 SaberCats, it’s all done with purpose: win matches, contribute heavily in his second season with a contending team and use his platform responsibly to grow the game.
After qualifying for the playoffs last year in his first season and competing in Dubai with the USA Eagles to help qualify the United States for the Rugby World Cup, Dyer started his own podcast called the Chase. He has a YouTube channel and he uses these outlets to talk with fellow leaders in sport and share his lessons from the game of rugby.
“I remember myself as a young kid looking up to guys and all I wanted to do was be them,” Dyer said. “Now that I think I’m on track for being that person, I think it’s a responsibility to inspire the next generation. I’m fortunate to have a platform through the sport of rugby that I can share my message.”
His YouTube channel is devoted to positive themes of trusting the process, establishing a mindset toward success and being mindful of others.
The description of his channel:Â “Rugby player. Dream chaser. Health and wellness fanatic looking to inspire you to chase your own dreams and share with you how I am chasing my own.”
Dyer is quickly growing an audience as a content creator with an inspirational theme.
“The message is there’s no dream that’s too big in life,” Dyer said. “I want to inspire every person to chase their dream, so, later in life, they look back and they have no regrets.”
Surrounded by young autograph-seekers at SaberCats Stadium, Dyer looked at them while conducting an interview as he kept signing shirts.
“This is a big reason why I play the game of rugby,” he said. “It’s for these kids.”
Dyer, 25, has emerged as one of the SaberCats’ top players. He delivered a key stop in a home win over the San Diego Legion.Â
At 6-foot-2, 215 pounds, Dyer is athletic, tough and fundamentally sound.
He has one less try than flanker Gideon van Wyk.
It’s all about team-oriented goals for Dyer, not about himself, with an eye toward constant self-improvement.
“I think I’m upbeat,” Dyer said. “I always look at what I’m doing wrong versus all the things I’m doing right. I’m trying to find a balance between making my strengths super strengths and working on my weaknesses, so I think in an all-right place. I’m striving to be the best.”
The SaberCats return to play Saturday night at home against Rugby ATL after falling short in a road loss to the Seattle Seawolves prior to a bye.
“I think we’re building a foundation,” Dyer said. “I think we’re far from peaking. We’re far away from our potential, which is amazing. On the other hand, we have a lot of work to do. We just go to work every single day.”
