Paul Emerick takes helm of SaberCats
After an international playing career that spanned three countries and nearly ten years representing the United States national team, former rugby player Paul Emerick aspired to become a Major League Rugby head coach.
On Thursday, he received that wish far more abruptly than he expected when the Houston SaberCats announced that coach Justin Fitzpatrick agreed to resign from the team with five games remaining in the season.
“I was a bit taken back,” Emerick said. “The general consensus is we’re sad to see Justin leave. He was here from the inception of the MLR league and building this team. He’s put in countless, countless hours not only this year but last year to get this off the ground so it’s a bit of a shock for everyone.”
