Oh Captain, Our Captain
Texas and the Houston SaberCats are now the new home for scrum-half, De Wet Roos. De Wet was a remarkable scrumhalf in the Shute Shield semi-professional rugby union, in which he showcased his quick and uniquely accelerative movement and accuracy. Standing at a height of 5 foot 7 inches and a weight of 168 lbs, Roos has the ability to make explosive and abrupt passes and movement creating the opportunity for big plays. To add to his talent Roos is also notable for his quick thinking, good kicking and high rugby IQ.
Born on June 10th, 1990, De Wet Roos is the 5th generation descendant of General Christiaan Rudolph De Wet of South Africa. Growing up in Kroonstad, South Africa, Roos found an interest in rugby at the age of 5. “Rugby is like a religion in South Africa.” De Wet explains. “So there was no other option but to play. Apart from injuries there hasn’t been a year where I missed a year of rugby.” Before locking in on his passion for rugby, Roos also wrestled competitively from the age of 7 to 12. At the age of 12, De Wet’s father received a job offer prompting the family to pack their bags and start a new life in Sydney, Australia. With a new environment and the need for a hobby outside of education, Roos decided to take what he learned in wrestling and turned his focus to Rugby. With wrestling in his background and his athletic physique, Roos was able to play rugby at a high level. Before landing here in Houston, the South African-born Australian made appearances on many notable teams such as the 2017 Brumbies Super Squad and Pro D2’s Narbonne. Continuing to pursue and further his professional rugby career, Roos signed with your Houston, SaberCats in September 2019.
It’s fair to say that De Wet Roos, or otherwise known as ‘Roosy’, has made quite a name for himself on the fields. But when he’s not training or scrummaging on the field, Roos finds time well-spent by staying busy or with loved ones whether that be on a golf course or at home barbecuing. During his time here in Houston, De Wet has found appreciation for the Houston SaberCats organization’s professional training system as well as the professional but genuine relationships built with his teammates and coaching staff.
