HOUSTON SABERCATS NAMES NEW ‘FORWARDS’ COACH

HOUSTON, TX – Interim Head Coach, Paul Emerick, appoints Darren Morris as the Forwards Coach for the Houston SaberCats, pro rugby team.
Houston SaberCats /Major League Rugby welcomes Darren Morris to the team. Morris is noted for being a prop, capped 18 times by Wales (1998-2004), toured on the Lions side (Australia 2001) along with Argentina & South Africa (2004). Most notably, Morris also served as scrum coach during the 2011 World Cup for the Russian national team, and as forwards coach of that team in 2012 to 2013. The next year (2013-2014), Morris took a role as Director of Rugby for Kuban (pro rugby team/ Russia), coaching team to their highest ever position at in the top division of rugby in Russia. By 2015, Morris moved to the U.S (Texas), where he served for the Dallas Griffins (2015-2016) and then to his most recent role as Director of Rugby for the Dallas “Reds” Rugby Club from 2017 to current day.

About Houston SaberCats: The Houston SaberCats are a professional Rugby team based in Houston, Texas. The SaberCats are one of seven original teams of Major League Rugby (MLR) which played its first season 2018. The team’s ownership group of Houston and London-based business leaders headed by majority owner Miguel Loya, joined forces with the City of Houston to build a $15 million multi-purpose sports complex in Houston which will include three fields large enough for rugby, soccer, football, lacrosse and field hockey. The stadium field boasts seating for 3,200 fans with standing-room for another 800 patrons, parking for 1,200 vehicles, locker room facilities, and concessions. The complex is located in the City-funded Houston Sports Park. AVEVA are the Principal Partner of the SaberCats and hold the naming right to AVEVA Stadium which hosted its inaugural match on April 13, 2019. The team proudly displays the AVEVA logo across the chest of the game jerseys.
