Coach’s Corner: SaberCats vs. Seattle Seawolves
Fulltime 27-14
vs SEATTLE SEAWOLVES Mar, 10th, 2019
Playing Seattle on the road is always going to be a test. The SeaWolves have turned Starfire Stadium into a mini fortress with some of the most passionate and vocal fans in Major League Rugby. The current champions are undefeated at home. It is easy to imagine why as the Seattle crowd are good for a score or two. The SeaWolves’ cross town NFL equivalents, the SeaHawks, have coined the phase 13th man to speak of their supporters. The SeaWolves appear to be creating something similar at Starfire with how much their fans support aids the players on the pitch. While this is great for the league it creates a great challenge for the visiting team.
The game was an incredibly evenly contested affair with the lead changing hands a handful of times. As we went into the final 10 mins we were leading by a couple of points courtesy of the boot of fly half Sam Windsor. The SeaWolves showed their experience and stuck to their guns. They kept applying pressure and we were punished heavily on the scoreboard for our mistakes in our own end leaving us with nothing to show for a gritty performance. What we can take out of Sunday’s performance is a lot of pride in how hard we competed against the reigning Champions in the cauldron that they (and their fans) have created. This Saturday we welcome NOLA Gold to Constellation Field. Last season’s matchups against NOLA were always fun and hard fought. We will be looking forward to being home and playing in front of our own supporters, and we look to build on the positives that we manufactured in the first 70 minutes of this match. Go Cats Go!
